The Christchurch earthquakes

Today I have to do a blog about the work I have been doing work about the Christchurch earthquakes we had to read a book and then answer some questions one of the questions were how have the Christchurch earthquakes had an impact on our city I just write that the earthquakes destroyed lots of houses and destroyed some other stuff here is the work that I did.

How have the Christchurch earthquakes had an impact on our city? The Canterbury earthquakes caused a significant change to the natural environment including liquefaction, the land levels changed and there were numerous rock slides and landfalls. Also, lots of houses were destroyed in the earthquake and the walls of some of the houses fell down and some water pipes got destroyed. Roads, bridges, power lines, cell phone towers and buildings collapsed.

What positive or negatives have come from the quakes? Some of the negative things that have happened from the Christchurch earthquakes are that there was a lot of damage across Christchurch there were about 185 people that died there was also 164 people that were seriously injured by the earthquakes and many thousands of people were injured. Some positive things that have come from the Christchurch earthquakes are that they got to build some better buildings then they had back in 2011.

What are some changes that citizens have made to prevent damage happening from potential future earthquakes? Some of the things that they are doing to prevent more damage are when they are building a new house they are making the structure better so it is not so easily knocked down also some schools or something they are nailing down things like bookcases and people that work at bars or other places they will be more prepared for the next big earthquake.

water safety tips

Today I have been doing some work on water safety tips for a couple of hours because we are going to jelly park next week and our teacher wanted us to do some work to see if we know some water safety stuff and to tell other people about water safety. Here is the work that I did.

Communication

This week we had the challenge to communicate from one end of the field  and try to communicate with the person on the other end of the field my group used morse code to try and communicate with each other  to code we were trying to send was In Latin science means knowledge morse code is a method used in telecommunication called dots and dashes or dits and dahs. My team didn't get the code right because

Parihaka

This week we have been learning about parihaka and their histories like who founded parihaka and when it was founded parihaka was a place for people to go and relax and a place to protest peacefully here is the work I did.

What events lead up to Parihaka being established? Parihaka wanted to establish a community for everyone to be equal and to have peace in the world that they were living on land they believed the government had given them.. Then the government went back on their word, so the people protested peacefully, but they were still arrested.

What were the ideas behind setting up Parihaka? They wanted a safe place to live and to have a peaceful life before the lions/British troops came and ruined their life forever.

Who established Parihaka? The people who established parihaka was Te whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi they established Parihaka in the early 1860s.

Where is Parihaka located?  Parihaka is located between Mount Taranaki and the Tasman Sea in the North Island of New Zealand

When did the invasion of Parihaka occur? It occurred on the fourth of November of 1881  about 644 soldiers and 1,000 settlers volunteers from all around the country.

How do you think the people of Parihaka were feeling when the troops entered their village? It said in the Video that they were fazed about it, stood their ground and waited for the troops to come and invade where they lived. I don't know how they were feeling but what I can say is when you know that people are coming to kill you, you are going to be worried and scared.

Do you think stories about the events of 5th November 1881 were reported on by the media at the time?  No, I don’t

I don't because this was a very long time ago and I don't think that cameras were about back then and they had the technology to film it. But then again there could have been newspapers and letters that might have been sent to the mayor.

How long were Te Whiti and Tohu imprisoned? Where? What did they intend to do when they returned to Parihaka? They flew into Dunedin and stayed in jail for 1 year and then got let out of prison.

What was the impact on Māori when the New Zealand Company and other representatives of "The Crown" confiscated or purchased land very cheaply from Māori? What happened to Māori who lost their land? Where and how did they live?

How do you think the New Zealand wars impacted on iwi and groups of people who were no longer able to live on their Whenua? The parihaki who had fought the Crown lost very substantial areas of land. Under the New Zealand Settlements, the parihaka would have felt sad that they couldn’t live with there family they also would have felt angry at the people that killed there family.

What does the word PEACE mean to you? What is "passive resistance? What does the phrase mean? The word peace means that there is no one fighting or harming each other and people are free to do stuff that they want to do and there are no disagreements. Passive resistance means that when people try to attack you try to use passive resistance and not fight them or when someone tries to arrest you try to use a non-violent way of refusing.

What other ways are there to solve major issues between people/countries that do not use violence as a way of controlling others or solving problems? Try to talk to them and find out the reason why they are fighting each other, try to prove that the other person didn’t do it.

Who are some of the other world leaders who have used passive resistance? What was their cause and how is it peaceful? Jacinda Arden was a really good world leader when the coronavirus first started coming into the country she put us straight into lockdown even though the rest of the world was still spreading it.  Now we don't have much of the coronavirus and we are allowed out of our houses but we still have to be mindful that it is still out there.

Market day

Today we have to answer some questions about the market day we had on Wednesday 22/9/2020

What would you change for next time? Maybe move the market day over to one of the parks because more people will be able to see the stuff and come and buy it and work with a group that I work well with to stick with an idea and not change it halfway through the business and enterprise.

How much did it cost to make your products/services? My group used all of the $20 dollars that we got to buy all of the things we needed.

How much did you borrow? We borrowed 20 dollars and we made a $12.50 cents profit.

How much money did you make on Market Day? I and my group made $ 32.50 when we spent 20 dollars so we made a $12.50 profit

What was your total profit? Our total profit was $12.50.

Was this what you expected? Why/why not? I did not expect this because we changed our idea like halfway through the business and enterprise and I didn't think we would get all of the work done.

What could have influenced this? I don't know people just came to our shop and then we started to say $1.50 for a drink and a Lollie or 50 cents for 2 lollies and $1 dollar for a drink.

Mars

Today we had to read a few pharghas and answer some questions about the story here are my answers.

  1. When can a mission to Mars (or from Mars) happen? Every 26 months Why? Because Earth and Mars are closer at that time to travel there.

  2. What are two geological features of Mars? Mars is known as the red planet because of its colour and the large amount of iron oxide. There are polar ice caps, Olympus mons the largest volcano in the solar system.

  3. What is one possible solution from the story about oxygen on Mars? CO2 is made of both boron and oxygen. Nasa has made a machine called MOXIE which uses electricity to split carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide also to split water into hydrogen gas and oxygen both of these can provide oxygen for you but Both these methods can provide oxygen, but they require lots of energy.

  1. If it doesn’t rain on Mars, where does the water come from? Is to dig up the underground ice and use heat to turn it into vapour. This vapour can be condensed back into water. Even though it is too cold to rain, water vapour is also present in the atmosphere on Mars.

As the atmospheric pressure decreased over millions of years, raindrops got bigger and rainfall became heavy enough to cut into the soil and start to alter the craters.

  1. How will people get food on Mars? What is a possible solution?  To get giant mirrors. These could orbit mars and direct sunlight onto the polar icecaps thawing all of the carbon dioxides Nutrients for the plants could come from recycling human waste or could be imported from Earth.

Hero VS Villain

For the past few weeks, in hurumanu 4  we have been working on a story about heroes and villains. We have also been doing some perspective drawings about our characters in the story here is my story below.

___________________________________________________________

One sunny day, a couple of people were taking a stroll in a park near an abandoned nuclear power plant with bits of metal. They could hear birds chirping and the trees swaying in the wind.

You think that there is nothing special about this except for one thing. You see, these two gentlemen weren’t, in fact, humans, no they were aliens disguised as humans walking amongst the human population. But why were they here?  And what was their purpose? That is exactly what you are going to find out……..

Henry is a 300-year-old alien, the disguise he uses has black hair. He wears a blue Nike top and has black Nike pants and a watch on his left hand.

They are from a planet that got taken over by robots. Jeffry is 140 years old and is from the same planet. They had escaped from a planet because the robots had taken over. These two aliens had escaped and robots were sent to capture them. They went all across space, then the alien’s finally escaped from the robots reaches. The aliens searched for planets that they could land on so they could try to disguise themselves as the life form on the planet that they landed on.

They see an individual flying through the sky in a helicopter. Henry thinks he has seen the guy in the helicopter before when he was at a bar. I think his name as bob he is wearing gold necklaces has a blue top on and black pants on, Bob is actually a robot that is transformed into a human. The guy looked like he was looking at the power plant suspiciously like he was going to do something to it that is what Henry was thinking but didn’t bother to do anything until he did something so he carried on walking around the park, then about 15 minutes later he saw the helicopter coming back to the park with something on top of the helicopter that looked like a magnet but really bigger than a normal magnet, then he saw things flying up to the magnet and then he saw a giant asteroid coming down to earth.

Henry is wondering what is happening and why a giant asteroid is coming down to earth Henry starts thinking about what he should do to get rid of the asteroid then the Henry has an idea to shoot him and his sidekick Jeffery up to the asteroid to blow it back into space and shoot the sidekick at the helicopter to break the magnet so the asteroid won’t come down any faster.

So Henry decided to play out his plan to infiltrate the powerplant he tries to run really fast at the powerplant but Bob put a force field up to try and keep them out then he tries to fly really fast but he fails but he keeps trying and he finally brakes through the force field they go inside to find out the place has traps everywhere they think how they are going to get through the traps then they remember that they have powers so the break the traps.

They get to the control system and turn the power on they get in the giant cylinder kind of thing to launch them up in the sky so they use their powers to turn to flip the switch to shoot them up into the sky and the sidekick breaks the magnet in half and the hero cracks the asteroid and shoots it back into space the robot tries to fight the aliens but Henry and Jeffry combine their powers to create an inescapable jail cell.

They made a jail cell over the robot then they get teleported into the jail cell.

Here are the two pieces of artwork. Here are my hero and my setting that is at a nuclear power plant. I think this hurumanu was okay because trying to do the drawing was pretty fun but the writing was a bit hard for me.

monologue

This is the monologue the I am doing can I talk like a pirate?  Ay, matie!  Avast! Ahoy!  Aye-aye, I can!   Shiver me timbers! I can talk like a pirate better than any lily-livered, jelly-legged sea-goer that ever there once was!  I say whatever I’ve got to say in a pirate way and if any bilge-sucking buccaneer says I don’t, I’ll leave him to the brisket!  I swear on Davy Jones’ Locker, to be a true blue pirate you’ve got to be able to load a cannon and fire it- but most important you’ve got to talk like a pirate!

The role I am being is Rodger I am 28 years old I am a pirate I started out being a

My strengths

Last term we did a worksheet about our strengths these are my top five strengths.

1. Gratitude means to appreciate things in life like food, family, clothes and other things.

  • I show gratitude when I get given stuff and I don’t complain about the things I get. It is important to show gratitude because some people don’t have things that you might get.

2. Hope means you're likely to be a positive person even if things aren't great you’ll believe they’re going to improve.

  • I show hope by staying positive when things are down or something. It is important to show hope because when things get hard you still believe things will get better.

3. Forgiveness is if you do something wrong or other people do something wrong, and you're willing to forgive them and move on.

  • I show forgiveness by forgiving some people when things happen that they might do. It is important to show forgiveness because it makes you empathetic and doesn’t hold a grudge.

4. Love is where you show you listen, care and make people feel important so you are really good at building strong relationships.

- I have shown love by helping my parents out with some stuff.

5. Humility is where you don’t show off because you don’t have to. You let other people notice your skills and knowledge, and don’t worry about trying to convince them you’re “all that”.

- I show humility by keeping my head down and trying to finish my work on time.

Summary of History show

Today we were watching one of our videos in social studies. It was about the New Zealand Wars. Then the missionaries thought that there was a spy around them so they killed the man they thought was a spy. Then there was a Maori that was going to ambushing British and they killed seven people in 1864.

A bit later in the story, the New Zealand war was dragged on for about 20 years 3000 people died but 2000 of those people were Maori. There was also a man called Te Kuiti who stole a supply ship from the British in 1868  and then he started a war with the British.  Someone tried to stop the war but the Maori had an advantage because they already had a plan set out.

Maori-how to make a Hangi

In Maori, we are learning about how to make a hangi. First, you need to dig a hole in the ground for the food. Then you need to build a fire at the bottom of the pit using hardwood. After that pile volcanic rocks on top of the wood. Then Set the fire alight and leave it to burn. Once the fire has burnt out, the rocks should be white-hot. Then prepare the food. After that place, the food in the Hangi put the meat at the bottom and vegs at the top. Then cover the food with white cloths and they have to be wet and then put dirt on top then after 3 - 4 hours uncover the hangi, and remove the food and enjoy your Hangi.

Here is the link to the Matariki slide to show you what we have done in Maori.

Here is the screenshot of how to make a Hangi.
 The video isn't working.

Tane Mahuta

Today in Tane mahuta some people were planting the vegetables for the garden. There where four vegetables one of them where cauliflower, broccoli, beetroot, cabbage and we had some people that we're cleaning out the shed that is going to be turned it to a classroom. There were some people that were weeding the garden with Mark and there were people that were using hammers to break up the wooden tables and throw them into a pile.

Science safety equipment

Today I am going to talk about safety rules in a science lab and some equipment that we use In a science hurumanu our science teacher Mr palmer Told us 10 of the equipment that we use in the science lab and 10 safety rules in the lab that we have to do. I didn't have time to do the rest

Here are some safety rules In a science lab.
1.No running in the lab because you could knock someone over that is holding a test tube or you could break something.
2. Keep your bag under your desk or a table.
3. If you brake a glass you should tell the teacher and then clean it up and not leave it for someone else to clean up.
4.No eating or drinking in and no smelling the experiments.
5. Only use the equipment that you are told to use.

Orana wildlife park

On Tuesday we went to Orana park the classes that we went with was ts,wh and my class sh we had to meet at the learning commons then we headed off but the class that went first was wh then ts finally we went on to the bus but the first bus was full so some of the ts had to come on the second bus so then we headed off the person I sat next to was my friend Tyson and my other friend at the front of the bus and my other friends behind me was hunter ms and Levi was in the front with his friend logan we where nearly there and we went over the bump Then we got there so we split up into our classes then a tour guide talked to us she let us in and have morning tea then we moved to a place to drop our bags of then we move on to our tour guide Richard he talked to us about climate change.

3 things I enjoyed about Orana park was going to see the gorillas because I like gorillas the second thing I enjoyed was seeing the meerkats playing around and standing on the wooden pole standing up also I liked the keas because they were playing around and standing near us.

ART Projects

For the last seven weeks, we have been doing some stop motion films and I am going to tell you about what we did for the last seven weeks. The first thing we did was get into the groups that the teachers put us in. After that, we had to talk about what we were going to do in our stories after we wrote a practice story about what we wanted to do in the stories. After that, we shared our stories with our group to find out what we were going to do with the story. Our ending idea was chicken nuggets vs burgers then after we started moulding the clay into our actors of the story we made the burgers then we figured out that none knew how to make a chicken nugget out of clay. So Khush decided to do dumplings and Christan, Levi and I agreed with the idea to make dumplings. Then we made all of the clay figurines.

Solar Energy

Aim: To find out which colour attracts the suns heat.

Hypothesis: I think that the colour black attracts the most heat because it absorbs everything coming in from the sun and the darkest colour.

Materials:

  1.  1 white piece of paper
  2.  1 black rubbish bag
  3.  1 piece of tinfoil that is flat
  4.  1 foam cup
  5.  1 plastic cup covered with a black rubbish bag
  6. 1 plastic cup covered in tinfoil around it
  7. 1 thermometer

Steps

  1.   Go to the teacher and get the material
  2. Get plastic cup with tinfoil on it
  3.  get a foam cup and a clear cup
  4.  find a place to plug your heat lamp in
  5.  full all of your cups up
  6.   get a thermometer and cheek the temputer every 15 minutes

These photos are from the experiment that I was doing. The experiment is called solar energy we had to get in a group of 3-4 so we could do the experiment we had to get the materials that we needed to start and finish the experiment we had to record the experiment work that we have done.

Findings:

Time
Cup 1
